Study Abroad Poster Series

For three weeks during the summer of 2018, I participated in a Book Arts in Italy study abroad trip through WMU where I learned about several different topics such as bookbinding and printmaking. The group of 12 that I was with took classes with various professionals at the Florence School of Fine Arts, the Tipoteca in Cornuda, and the Scuola di Grafica in Venice. This triptych series (pictured below) was created for the Book Arts in Italy Exhibit that was held at the Kalamazoo Book Arts Center in September 2018. Each poster includes an original photograph as well as a quote from a significant person and moment during our trip. Three destinations. Three pictures. Three quotes.

Florence was the first city we visited, and this quote by our art teacher Charles Loverme rang true as I was able to find a little piece of myself there and never truly felt lost if I could find the Duomo.

Next, it was on to Cornuda. This quote was said by Kaitlyn, a photography student on the trip, who couldn’t get over the sheer beauty of this small town, which felt like it came out of a dream.

Venice was the last city we visited, and only a true Venetian could capture the brilliance of this city. That’s exactly what Roberto (our instructor at the Scuola di Grafica) was able to do with these three simple words.

This last picture shows where the work was set up for the 2018 show, I was also able to showcase some photography from the trip next to this personal piece.
